After about an hour walk we finally reached the St. Catherine Monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai about midway through the afternoon. Our goal was to reach the summit by sunset (approximately 8:00 PM). There are two main trails which lead from the monastery to the summit: the most direct is a 3000 step, stone cut stair case rightly called the Steps of Repentance --- which tradition has it was laid by a monk over the course of his life as a form of pennance. If that's the way you get to heaven, trust us, that monk's sitting up there and his back still isn't right. The other path up the mountain is the Camel Path which has been made in more modern times for the less stalwart travelers who either desire a more gradual ascent or want to attempt the trek on camel back. We decided to make the hike via the Camel Path on the way up, and take the Steps of Repentance back down.
